About Taboga Island

Taboga Island is located seven miles off the coast of Panama and is an absolute paradise to visit. In fact, it has enticed visitors for over 400 years and can trace its roots with the outside world to Vasco Nunez de Balboa, who was the first European to set foot on the island. Balboa named the island San Pedro, but after a while the moniker was set aside and the island was named Aboga, which is a native term meaning many fish.

One of the most famous residents of Taboga Island was French Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin, who relocated there after a short stint working with a French crew building a canal through Panama. Gauguin’s paintings of Taboga Island depicted the vibrant flora, fauna and people of the beautiful island.
